PACIFIC COLLEGE OF HEALTH & SCIENCE HOLISTIC NURSING PROGRAM ALUMNI HIGHLIGHTS – AUGUST 2020
Pacific College’s nursing program wishes to recognize those members of its nursing program family who are inspiring to us all! We spotlight alumni Sara Choi.
“Since graduating from the post-baccalaureate certificate program in holistic nursing at Pacific College of Health & Science, I’ve been working part-time as a holistic nurse at Northwell Lenox Hill Hospital. I also work per diem as an ER Nurse at NYP Weill Cornell Hospital, and I have a holistic practice, Sarang Healing LLC.
As an ER nurse at NYP Weill Cornell Hospital, I’ve been caring for COVID patients and experiencing the life-altering effects of this virus, not only for patients and family members but also for us care providers at the bed-side. On weeks that I do not work an ER shift, I support my fellow ER care providers as a holistic nurse, holding space for them by providing a healing environment. Wellness resources are made available to anyone interested in coaching, a mental health phone line, and self-care practices helpful in managing stress. In groups of 6, practicing social distancing, ER staff come to a healing tent where they have an opportunity to share their experiences. I lead them through a guided meditation and sound healing session using gongs, Tibetan sound bowls, crystal healing sound bowls, and chimes. After the session, they have an opportunity to share. Recently, an ER doctor responded, “That’s the first time I felt relaxed enough to take a deep breath.”
At Northwell Lenox Hill Hospital, I round on all the floors to visit the nurses, nurse techs, respiratory therapists, NPs, PAs, doctors, case managers, social workers, clerks, and environmental services staff, and ask how they are doing. As part of Team Lavender, a multidisciplinary team of staff supporting staff, I am one of several healthcare providers who hold space for fellow staff, providing an opportunity for them to process their experience. We provide emotional health resources, offer them lotions, lip gloss, mints, aromatherapy for their face masks, mindfulness practices, and one-on-one wellness coaching and encouragement.
In my private holistic practice, Sarang Healing LLC, I do one-on-one wellness coaching and distant Reiki via Zoom.
It’s been an honor to hold space for my fellow healthcare providers and the people of this community. I hope that we continue to unveil our eyes to the experiences that healthcare providers endure and truly see them, as we are encouraged to see our patients: as human beings needing compassion, care, and recognition. May this pandemic expand our perspective of health care, healthcare providers, and humanity around us, not only during the duration of this experience but to be forever changed by this experience.
I am forever grateful for all the jewels I learned from the Nursing professors at PCHS. I am continuing my learning journey with PCHS in the MSTOM – DAOM program, and I love it!
Honored to be on this journey of awareness, presence, and healing with each of you!"
In this together”,

Adopt These Habits for a Healthier, Happier Life
Have you been moving toward implementing new, healthier habits into your daily routine?
Well, today is the first day of the rest of your life, and Sarang Healing invites you to seize the opportunity to make the changes you want!
This doesn't mean you have to undertake a massive overhaul. Making even small changes to your everyday habits can enhance health and happiness.
Read on for guidance on healthy habits and tips for how to successfully implement them into your daily life.
Improve your health by cooking more at home.
Improve your health and finances by resolving to cook more at home. Eating in saves you money and generally results in more nutritious meals because you have greater control over the ingredients you use.
For example, incorporating more lean protein into your diet can help you feel fuller throughout the day and avoid overeating. Try hard-boiled eggs, turkey, or tuna and lettuce wraps.
Switch up your fitness routine by finding a workout buddy.
Exercise is essential for your physical and mental health. Working out improves cardiovascular stamina, muscle tone, and coordination. It also produces feel-good endorphins, neurotransmitters in the brain that boost your mood.
If you're feeling unmotivated to hit the gym, find a workout buddy. According to Medical Daily, working out with a partner can push you to exercise harder and longer. It's also a great way to make physical fitness more fun since there's a social aspect to it.
Prioritize happiness by incorporating mental health into your everyday life.
Your mental well-being is just as important as your physical health. Prioritize your happiness by consciously making space for more joy in your life.
You can try keeping a gratitude journal where you write down what you're thankful for every day — for example, spending more quality time with loved ones. Research suggests that socializing is important to maintaining mental health and decreasing the risk of anxiety and depression.
You can also try a simple daily five-minute meditation, which is shown to be effective in managing stress.
Improve your sleep habits by revamping your bedroom.
A good night's sleep allows your mind and body to rest, rejuvenate, and refresh. Sleep is essential for concentration and productivity. According to Healthline, it's also shown to help with healthy weight management, improve immune function, and reduce inflammation in the body.
Revamp your bedroom in order to improve sleep quantity and quality. Eliminate anything that’s contributing to stagnant energy like clutter and disorganization. Look for ways to infuse your bedroom with positivity and calm. Perhaps consider investing in blackout curtains and a white-noise machine to ensure your space is relaxing.
You can also embrace soothing pre-bedtime rituals, like taking a hot bath or reading a book.
Trade out bad habits with a replacement approach.
Odds are you have a bad habit here or there that you'd like to break. Maybe you want to quit smoking, drink less alcohol, or spend less time mindlessly scrolling through social media.
According to the National Institutes of Health, one way to successfully break negative behaviors is to replace them with healthier behaviors. For example, you likely scroll through
social media when you're bored. What could you do instead? Pick up a new hobby, like
crafting, to replace this behavior.
This list of action points can help you in your journey to improve your health and happiness.
However, you don't have to tackle every item on this list at once. Lasting change requires a
long-term commitment — it won't happen overnight. Start by simply taking one item from this
list and focusing on that. You can move on to the next point whenever you're ready.
